During the COVID-19 lockdown, citizens of different strata of society are facing problems related to grocery items. Amidst this crisis, poor migrants and rural farmers are the ones who have suffered the most. To support people during the pandemic, Indian communists in Kolkata are organizing farmer’s markets with free vegetables for those in need.

Local volunteers with the Communist Party of India (Marxists) have joined forces to set up a free-for-all market that’s open to anyone and everyone.

Apart from providing food to those in need, it also solves the problem of surplus produce from rural farmers which otherwise would go to waste. As supply chains have been in chaos due to the pandemic and unfortunately the lower economic strata are the ones to be affected, the CPI(M) used their networks to help out.

The CPI(M) also opened up community kitchens for migrant workers who are out of jobs, stranded, and struggling to reach home because of the complete lockdown.
