In an attempt to bring clarity on the recent suicide of IIT Madras student Fathima Latheef, Father Abdul Latheef clarifies that she had never claimed any religious discrimination against her.

In particular, there are posters getting shared everywhere quoting Fathima to have said: “My name itself is a problem, Vappichi.” Her father, when asked about any account of discrimination Fathima faced, didn’t tell that her daughter has said anything of this sort.

Biyas Muhammed a student of IIT Madras contacted her father Abdul Latheef regarding the aspect of Islamophobia discussed in relation to Fathima’s suicide. Fathima’s father clarified about the Islamophobic angle to her suicide while talking to News18 Channel.

The girl’s father clarified that

  • The Family doesn’t claim that Fathima had to face discrimination because of her Muslim identity. Instead, they have a ‘DOUBT’ that Islamophobia could have played a part in the issue. They don’t make any claim about any such discrimination which she faced in IIT Madras.
  • Unlike what is reported in certain media reports and posters, there has been NO from Fathima to her family about discrimination on the basis of religion.
  • In particular, there are posters getting shared everywhere quoting Fathima to have said: “My name itself is a problem, Vappichi.” Her father, when asked about any account of discrimination Fathima faced, didn’t tell that her daughter has said anything of this sort. It is rather the family’s doubt that her Muslim Identity could have played a role.
  • Fathima’s father has clarified that she didn’t use to wear a Shawl even before coming to the campus. It’s not a case of Fathima giving up or finding it difficult to wear a Shawl after coming to the campus.
